Choreo-athetosis with severe thyrotoxicosis.

چکیده
Introduction Fasting plasma tyrosine is raised in hyperthyroidism (Hall, Anderson and Smart, 1969) and serum magnesium levels are low in severe thyrotoxicosis (Marks and Ashraf, 1978). Although tyrosine hydroxylase is the rate-limiting enzyme in the metabolism of tyrosine it is conceivable that more dihydroxyphenylalanine is formed under these conditions which may give rise to choreiform movements. Two cases of chorea are described with responses and treatment. It is concluded that chorea is the severe end of the spectrum of dyskinesia of which tremor is the most common manifestation of milder thyrotoxicosis. It is also considered that chorea may be a commoner manifestation than previously described.

Choreo-athetosis and encephalopathy induced by phenytoin.
Two patients with intractable epilepsy who had been treated with various combinations of anticonvulsant drugs developed phenytoin encephalopathy. In both patients choreo-athetoid involuntary movements were prominent. Blood phenytoin concentrations were above 30 mug/ml. When phenytoin was given in smaller doses and its level in the blood fell the involuntary movements and other clinical manifest...
متن کاملVerapamil in angina: a double-blind trial.
Three cases of multiple sclerosis are reported, all of which developed chorea, choreo-athetosis, or athetosis during the course of their illness. The diagnoses were based on the association of diffuse and disseminated neurological lesions, a history of remission and relapse, a strongly paretic Lange curve in the C.S.F. with a negative Wassermann reaction, together with marked increase in the ga...
متن کاملNeuroacanthocytosis: a rare inherited movement disorder.
The chorea-acanthocytosis syndrome (CHAC) is a rare disorder beginning in late adolescent or adult life in association with acanthocytosis, a normal lipid profile and characterized by progressive neurological disease. The inheritance is usually autosomal recessive, although apparent sporadic and autosomal dominant instances are also known. We report here a young man who presented with choreo-at...
متن کاملRelation of parental age to rigidity in Huntington's disease.
The birth ranks and parental ages at birth of subjects affected with Huntington's disease were ascertained from the literature and examined in relation to the neurological sign displayed (muscular rigidity or choreo-athetosis). With respect to the sex of the affected parent, the percentage of rigid cases was found to decrease linearly with advancing paternal age and to increase linearly with ad...
